“The price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake.” said Meister Eckhart. We often find ourselves in a position of doubt when we have to take a firm decision and stick to it. Constantly thinking about the imaginary future repercussions, we don’t take such a broader look at the present as we might think. When it comes to love, the price that people pay for simply doing nothing is monumental: they function badly in society or they don’t function at all.

What do I mean by “not doing nothing” or “inaction”? The action of doing nothing is not connected to the literal meaning as you might think. Doing the same things over and over again in the same manner can also be considered inaction. You delude yourself that you are doing things differently only because you don’t stop doing things, but the way you do them only reinforces your bad pattern. So nothing changes because you don’t change. Just like a little mouse gulping on cheese, you have your fun running in circles over and over again in your maze, thinking “I’ve nailed it this time, I came on top! Universe, give me the piece of well-deserved cheese!” If we think about unhealthy relationships with people, this idea of inaction really makes sense.

Let’s take for example a guy with a history of never succeeding in having a meaningful love connection. Just like a bumblebee in mating season, he jumps feverishly from woman to woman, always thinking that the last was not compatible enough and that the future mate will definitely be better. With the arrogance and short shortsightedness of an unlucky mule, he is waiting for what he considers he deserves: better. What a delusion! How can you expect to receive better when you are still the same human being? Most men who remain stuck in this situation usually have their trauma luggage after them: a bad relationship with their mother, a lonely childhood with no affectio, addiction to porn, a crush over a female friend, fear of commitment, alcohol/drug abuse, etc. Most of them use trauma as an excuse and expect pity: how can you blame a guy for being a jerk when he has so much trauma? Just like the forest and the tree analogy, we must see behind what people tell us and search for the meaning in the actions that they do. Do they actually do something about their issues , like going to therapy, or changing their friends, their environment or fixing their relationship with their parents? Or they just blabber about the misfortunes of life and expect complete understanding? Look at the signs of inaction: are they changing only by the words or by actually doing something? There is a huge difference between what people say that they will do and what they are actually doing.

The individuals who never change are the ones that look you up to make some false apologies to boost their own egos, to check you up to see if your life has gone better than theirs and to see if you have a last ounce of pity for their life full of drama. You’ll probably split the bill because he can’t do better and mourn for your lost time. They are a lost cause and they will (continue to) waste your time. They are not interested to see how you are doing and if you are ok, they are too self-absorbed. They don’t want to change, they are just comfortable with their status quo and will always search for the next one to listen to their sad stories. They don’t make mistakes because making a mistake is doing something different and you won’t see that from them. You won’t see great gestures or a great change. Greatness is not up their alley. Their way of thinking is the same, their actions are the same, their friends are the same. The cost that they pay for this lifestyle is the same with the frog in the boiling water: slowly doing nothing reduces their chance to see that they’re drowning in a life that doesn’t serve their best interests.

It’s the same thing with women. Women have become more open, willing to change partners more often than 100 years ago. Fast and furious they believe that the next prince charming is waiting on his white horse ready to receive galloping love. Futile numerous attempts to get the smartest, the hottest, the richest, the most popular only ends up with disappointment. Next time will be better, even if it’s over a number most of women would be ashamed to admit. Since when this type of behavior increases chances to have a great meaningful love? Just like the males, this type of women never makes mistakes: it was always him, she’s too good, she was unfortunate, dang she doesn’t have the luck etc. Poor excuses and no change. It is worse to get by in life by doing nothing different than to try and occasionally fail and learn. If you would get an A at every test, you wouldn’t see the need to improve. You are by definition perfect. You are willing to accept your mistake and learn when you get a lower grade. It shows you that you are not always right and it plants self-doubt and self-awareness in you. It makes you humble.

Dealing with the wrong people in our lives should not be something to be ashamed of or resentful for. It shows our capacity to give a fair chance to someone who apparently would not deserve it. It puts us in a situation of vulnerability and uncertainty. It’s a test of character and endurance. There are no bad men or women, the relationships are the ones which can turn toxic and a person can be wrong for you and right for another. Such is life. You can be happy that you succeeded in overcoming adversity and ingratitude. You took action. You can’t be sure that the other person will ever appreciate you and feel genuinely sorry or if the femme fatale will mature into a responsible reliable woman. It is not up to you to change them, they have to change themselves. If the frog doesn’t jump, you wouldn’t put your hands in the boiling water to save it, right? It would be a pain to lose your hands and there are plenty of frogs out there anyway. You can’t save them all and it’s not your job to do that anyway.
