I think one of the things you find at every turn, hidden behind friendly faces, stiff suits and even imposing buildings is a “problem”. Whether we prefer to hide the fact that something causes us discomfort, or flaunt our helplessness to gain some pity or false sympathy, we must admit that we cannot live without having problems and we would not want to do so if we had a choice. Many of our problems are related to tangible things, such as money, clothes, food, a life partner, a roof over our heads. We do not really bother with philosophy, at least not intentionally – we want to “get something out of” solving the problem, and dilemmas are only food for the spirit and not for the stomach. A simplistic, perhaps even rudimentary way of thinking, but which cannot be 100% condemned for its utilitarianism. We are beings who need these material things to survive, and the internal struggle and the struggle with those around us may have reduced us to bipedal animals struggling to survive for their own comfort. Sad, strange for the so-called modern century in which we live, and one of my problems: the fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a human being among all those who resemble you (at least from an anatomical point of view), that you no longer know where humanity is really heading (if it is heading towards something or rushing into the unknown) and that inner dilemmas are no longer in great demand… They seem like big words laid out on a paper that only exists on a screen, but they sum up the details of my problem.
I see every day on the news and around me how our taste for the macabre, the grotesque and the fascinatingly odious has become something normal – it’s repulsive the idea that you would sit quietly in an armchair hearing how a man killed his wife for a bottle of booze and you would only have the feeling that it’s good, that you are safe. Watching this you would feel that it is basically banal news (hey, people die every day), you would eventually dig through other channels to find something even more monstrous. I remember how Şerban Foarţă said that when the stock of monsters decreases, journalists take care to complete it with those they have manufactured themselves. As true as it could be, with just one small change: monsters are no longer invented, they really exist. Man, with such a precious and unique gift as reason, this thinking reed that plays on the stage of life, has become a creature as if detached from the fairy tales of dragons and gnomes that I read when I was little. It is horrifying to think that now, as you read these lines, some people are ready to sell their organs for a tiny amount of money, that some girls are sold like pieces of meat at a stall to enrich others, how some children are exploited and sent to work before they know what childhood means, what the security of a home and the love of parents mean. Can you still call such a being capable of doing more harm than any creature on earth human? This is a problem, my problem, because while such monsters with a human face walk among us, there are those who I can proudly call people, those who still have a noble purpose and independent of their own ideals and ambitions. I know them from TV or from everyday life, I know them through history, I imagine them when I see a movie or hear music that inspires me. They are that guide in Tarkovsky’s film that guides you to a space that does not have to take material form, that is not palpable as we want all things to be, that will not guarantee you eternal glory or immortality. They are the guide we have lost, the heroes we have forgotten or that we remember when we need them – it is painful to realize that for a nation, for its members, these models represent nothing more than a dusty past, which is not on the same wavelength as the present of speed, where there is no longer any need to smell the pages of an old book, where spontaneous and sincere interaction between two people is replaced by virtual communication, where “time is money” and people are tools to demonstrate your excellence. We move so quickly, we forget so easily, we hurt with complete serenity and all for what? Isn’t it just for some valuable papers, for some clothes to cover our spiritual ugliness, for a moment of happiness that gives us the illusion that we are accepted and loved for what we want to appear? I would like us to take off our masks for a moment, at least in front of ourselves, and look at ourselves as we are and as those before us were hundreds and hundreds of years ago: a naked body, a simple face behind which hides the capacity to reason, to empathize and to accomplish extraordinary things through the power of the mind and the touch of the soul. But all this unmasking that would leave us naked in the face of self-criticism, without the material supports with which we have suffocated ourselves…. would be a real problem, right?
Now when I think about how I could find a solution to what I would call the alienation of modern man (which does not belong to me in concreto, it is linked to those who surround me and therefore belongs to everyone by extension), an extrapolation to the animal environment comes to mind. This idea seems strange, bizarre and even risky, but reflecting on it I realized what the cause of my problem would be. I remember that some time ago I had watched a documentary film called The March of the Penguins (“La marche de l’empereur”). The plot of the documentary is simple, but like most simple things, it hides meanings of unexpected depth. It shows how king penguins travel hundreds of kilometers, without feeding, through the most hostile place on Earth (Antarctica) to find their “soul mate”. Once there, the future parents take care of the only egg in turn, each of them traveling hundreds of kilometers to find food while the other stays and takes care of the future offspring without moving from the spot. What do these animals demonstrate? The fact that when there is solidarity, even a creature that does not have our reason is capable of the most amazing sacrifices, leaving us speechless, us who run after material benefits, after worthless objects and feelings devoid of authenticity. Even if a single penguin out of the hundreds that march to find a mate stumbles can no longer walk, the others jump to its aid and do not leave without him; we, on the other hand, sell or kill our babies, rob each other, we do not miss any opportunity to humiliate someone if we have the strength to do so and we learn that it is a sign of bravery if we manage to “step on corpses”. We lack solidarity with our fellow men, that humanity that we could show in moments when we are needed – this acute lack is one of the causes of the problem that I have tried to expose, a problem that many of those who are not aware of it are facing.
If, at the end of the day, we put our heads on the pillow without asking ourselves whether we were human today, if what will remain a memory for future generations will be a skeleton of a nation that was full of hatred, envy, intolerance and superficiality, if we will only look for our heroes in books or films and will not find them in the present, living through us and with us, if all these things will not remain just my thoughts, then I fear that we have long been involved in a march of the lost, a march that only opens the wound of a problem: the problem of monsters with human faces.
