Being ill sucks. Have you noticed what kind of humble, lamb- like attitude you develop when you are experiencing sickness? You are vulnerable, attacked by millions of germs and you are witnessing your own downfall sort of speak. Sounds so dramatic, but it is true. A hypochondriac gets a rush out of this , he could tell you all about it. But for normal people, there is nothing exhilarating about a disease, we hate it and we want to get back to normal as soon as possible. Why is it that after such an episode we tend to appreciate more our own reality, even if it’s not all flowers and buttercups? How come we need “chaos” in order to appreciate the mere calm of our existence, no matter how dull or boring or frustrating or just plane Jane average it is?
Fear is a big factor in this. You see, when we think we have it all sorted out, we go into our comfort zone and we stay there for a long time, many of us for all of our lives. Pretty boring right? A sickness is something out of our control, a proof that we are just flesh and bones and a jelly stuff called brain. You can’t do much even, if you are a genius, in front of Germzilla. Notorious figures died because they have lost the battle. Nevertheless, there are cases when you see medicine combined with strong will to be a success. People hurt in car crashes, in the war, in work incidents etc., etc., manage to come out alive and also change their behavior. In the same time, there are people who could be put in front of death a million times and still they would not change long term. It is the proper mean example of the overweight lady who swears she will not touch anymore finger-licking-good stuff after she sees the first pound she has lost. It’s true…until the next day. If the confrontation with the frightening loss of your life doesn’t make you change, nothing will. You are just too ignorant to look at your own trauma and you refuse to change anything about you. You decided you don’t deserve more and therefore you won’t get more. You become what you think you are, some smart people said. And oh how they spoke the truth.
What I would find interesting to experiment is to translate that feeling of fear into a positive booster long term. Unless you have the immunity system of an immortal, you know that at a certain point you’ll get sick. What if you use that knowledge to make the best of your healthy times? Put a bit of that dose of realism to good use. That doesn’t mean to be all the time fearful and go to extremes like “carpe diem” do -all -today -you’ll -die -tomorrow kind of mentality. That sort of mentality we can leave for the adolescents going through puberty and waiting for their frontal cortex to be fully developed in order for them to grow up someday.
It’s about awareness and realism combined with a positive attitude toward life. And it would help fight the postponing behavior.: I will do this next year because bla bla bla. What if next year you will be sick, or dead, or whatever? Why not try to push yourself and maybe do it sooner, not like tomorrow, but just push yourself out of your comfort zone at least 0.1% and take a chance in doing things in a different way? We act like the train of time will always arrive in the train station, but we forget that this train is not the average one, it doesn’t come in time for all of people, it only allows in the passengers who get in time to catch it, if you see what I mean. Sitting ducks never fly unless they spread their wings.
So next time you have an encounter with Germzilla, do your best to come out alive and rise like a good Titan, Avenger, Transformer, whatever hero you imagine yourself to be. If you want to achieve great things you have to think outside of your comfort zone and germs are pretty good in guiding you through that. We owe them a big thank you.
ROMANIAN
Destul de plictisitor, nu-i așa?
