Hello 🙂 This is how most conversations start today. And this is only the beginning. After a while the flow of emoticons and smiley faces, together with witty gifts, cover a vast array of emotional clues we are trying to provide to the other screen…pardon, person. We see this very often at today’s teenagers. Glued almost permanently to their phones, they hang out and sometimes text each other while standing at the same table. Communication, as we used to know it, is fading away. #onlineisbetter is taking the new leading role. Why people were so taken away by the digital interaction, is it something in the old way of communicating that it was missing and technology provides it? Or is it in fact something being taken and not given by this form of talking to one another?

Let’s assume two theories about this phenomena: a symbiotic one and a parasitic one. Symbiosis is a beautiful process. It’s about collaboration, mutual benefits and an overall growth of both parts involved. We’ve seen many successful examples in nature and it never ceases to amaze us how diverse and interesting these relationships can be. If plants can do it, we should be flying through this. Our phone, our computers, our intelligent devices should supply us with the right amount of tools in order to facilitate us a better and happier life. To help us communicate better, to add value to the time we spend being intertwined with tech life and to put a smile on our face. After prolonged exposure to this symbiotic connection, we should feel more alive, more energetic and with an improved sense of being. Is it so? Do people feel like this after spending hours stuck inside a phone or a computer screen trying to mimic their feelings to the other person? After you log off , do you feel better? Emotionally satisfied and happy? If it is so, then technology must be the right pill for you. Even if in high doses, you still feel you have meaningful things with those on the other side of the screen, the process is working out great. Keep it. Nobody would want to lose such an important connection with the technology, especially when there are people all around you doing the same thing. Connecting. Wink.

A parasitic relationship is destructive. For one or both of the parts implicated. One partner sucks the other dry of energy, nutrients, benefits, while the other one is always giving, slowly reaching out to the bottom of the bag, until nothing of them is left. The parasite prevails and thrives, ready to start the quest for the next victim. There is nothing good coming out for the host from this interaction, only fairy dust in the eyes which act like a blindfold until the parasite can take control. A cycle of life ends while the other grows bigger and better. Survival of the fittest or the death of the naive? Either way, you can’t easily shake off a parasite and get back to normal after that. Examples in the natural world and in human medicine show how difficult it is. If technology is a parasite, how does it affect us? I believe that the biggest parasitic impact of technology is that it changes the way we think we should communicate. It shifts the wheels of the whole process by throwing the communication in a whirlpool of emoticons, texts, images, links, hashtags, filters, until it’s a total mess. A pretty mess. Something with a different form, almost prettier. But the trick is that it makes you comfortable. A lazy mess sending the pretty package to the other lazy mess stuck in the screen. Almost addicted to the rush, people can’t get enough of it. There are so many possibilities, so many people easy to reach out online, so easy to send hearts and hugs and puppy eyes. While they send it to you, they already think about how to send it to others in the list as well. A whole freakin’ community! Who would have thought that the virtual world is so exciting? Too bad you can’t build your family life in it, just like in The Sims. It would be just exquisite.

The consequences of this parasitic relationship are being felt only after the screens shut down. Withdrawal from all the pretty life you and others seem to have online is painful. You go back into the normality of your mundane life after you snatched 10 selfies in the bathroom and everyone approved them with 🙂 You are absently present in your life. Although you’re capable to put down the phone, the laptop and actually meet the person and have a genuine conversation about anything but stupid stuff, you choose not to. Sometimes you take your phone and scroll down while you are in a face to face meeting. It’s just more fun. That is the great “merit” of technology: it makes you believe you are present everywhere, when in fact your absence is getting bigger and bigger. Mentally, emotionally, physically.

So how can we deal with technology in a way that doesn’t alienate us , in a way that keeps our humanity? First of all, think of it as a simple strategy to reach out. It is good you can reach out to other people and find different personalities, but never forget the importance of old school traditional human interaction. We are very much socially structured in a way that too much of technology will eat us alive and too less will make us outcasts. A balance is necessary and very important for the well being of our mind, soul and spirit. Before thinking about sending emoticons and gifts, remember how many doors and hearts were opened in the world with a simple smile, a hug and a good talk.
